A Special Room

A Special Room

by Samaira, 3rd Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

My favorite room is my grandmom’ s room. Her room is warm and soft
with lots of soft covers. She has a small HD TV, a small refrigerator with
water in it and two telephones in her room. She is so nice to let my brother
and I play in her room. In her room there are a lot of pictures of my family.
I enjoy seeing pictures of my relatives from the old days. Near the window
she has books on a shelf and stuffed animals. She loves reading and starts
every day with the newspaper. She has note pads in her room in case she has
to write things for her church and for paying her bills.
In her room are boxes with special things that make you feel good, like
family books, photos and some of my grandfather’ s things. In her drawers
are her clothes and on top are some more of my grandfather’ s things. My
grandmom’ s room is a special place to be when you want to get things off
your mind. These are some of the reasons why my grandmom’ s room is a
special room for me.

My Talent of Singing

My Talent of Singing

By Lauren, 5th Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

Hello’’ my name is Lauren Campbell. I am ten years of age. I attend the
Overbrook Elementary School. I am now in the fifth grade. I am writing this essay to
share with you my talent. I hope you will enjoy my story as you read along.
My talent is singing. A lot of people in this world have the talent of singing and a
lot of people do not, but I believe I have a singing talent. I enjoy other activities too, but
I enjoy singing the most. I feel very proud of myself when my family and friends admire
my wonderful voice when I am singing. I also write my own songs, which are placed,
in my songbook. So far I have written about twenty songs. My favorite song of all is
titled, “Mother You are the Sunshine.”
I think of singing as a hobby as much as a talent. I know that singing is my talent
and I hope some day soon I will get the chance to show off my talent to the world. When
I grow up I would like to become a singer. If I could get the opportunity now, it would be
undeniable.
I have been in two choirs before, the Two Hundred Voice Children’s Choir and
my normal school choir. Each time I meet up with my choir mates to sing, I feel inspired.
I believe some day soon I will be a great singer.

Winter In 19151

Winter In 19151

By Christina, 5th Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

Rolling in the chilly snow at Lamberton School.
Staying warm in the cozy library.
Making angelic snow angels in Papa’s Playground.
Starting a dangerous snowball fight in my yard on Malvern Ave.
Slipping on clear ice outside Overbrook Pizza.
Making a lopsided snowman on Oxford Street.
Celebrating memorable holidays with my family.
Getting gifts on my fabulous birthday.
Making exquisite Valentine cards.
No school on exciting snow days.
Mailing colorful Christmas cards at the post-office.
Cutting down enormous Christmas trees.
Customer shopping for magical cough drops at Rite-Aid.
Riding SEPTA to The Gallery for new beautiful winter fashions.
Winter is a busy time in my neighborhood.

My Musical Talent

My Musical Talent

By Christina, 5th Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

I started singing as soon as I learned how to talk. It started with short rhymes and
I got better at them over time. The first song I knew all the words to was a song from my
church choir. I sang my first solo in my church choir when I was five years old. I’ve been
singing all my life, now singing is my LIFE!
I like singing during performances because it feels good when the audience claps
for me. When the audience claps for me it gives me confidence to sing even better.
Singing certain lyrics can change how you feel. Sometimes I cry when I sing, sometimes
I laugh. When I sing during performances I have to sing loudly. That way the audience
can hear me and appreciate my song.
I sing everywhere and I sing mostly everything. Singing is everything to me. I
sing certain songs when I’m bored, mad, sad, or nervous. Singing has given me friends
and enemies. That’s why I love singing.

Mom-Mom House

Mom-Mom House

by Anissa , 4th Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

Of all the houses I have been in, my Grandmom’s house is my favorite because it is a
quiet place.

The aromas of my Grandmom’s house are awesome. The basement has a clean smell

of detergent. The bathroom is filled with soap, lotions and powder. The kitchen is filled
with the delicious smells my grandmom’s cooking.

In my Grandmom’s house, there are many rooms. The room I truly love is my room
because it is a girls’ room with pretty things. I also adore my grandmom’s room because
of her mural that my grandpop painted with flowers and birds above the bed.
Another room I truly love is the living room because it brings up so many memories like
my aunt visiting, smiling and giggling.

These are some of the reasons why my grandmom’s house is my favorite place.

My Artistic Talent

My Artistic Talent

Tanhiya, 5th Grade, Overbrook Elementary

My talent is art. I started drawing when I was in kindergarten so I was five years
old. The pictures I used to draw were simple. I used to draw flowers, people, dresses and
things like that. But the things I draw now are out of the ordinary. I draw funerals and
caskets because the caskets have so much detail and the people can be crying and there
could be a pastor. To me it is fun to draw these things. The other things that I draw that
are out of the ordinary are people playing sports like basketball, baseball and more.
Now I’m going to tell you who taught me. Me! I taught myself. When I saw
paintings and pictures I got interested. My dad is an artist so I so I got some of my talent
from him. The reason why I love or like to draw is because I can, and I do it well.
I love art so much. When I grow up, I am going to have two jobs: an art teacher
and an architect. When I become a teenager, my drawings are not going to be normal.
I’m going to draw baseball and basketball together, the sun and moon having tea and
more. Like I said, my talent is art.

A Poem About Peace in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King

A Poem About Peace in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King

By Anissa, 4th Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

Peace is like a kitten being born
Peace looks like by dad’s smile
It sounds like love beating in my heart
It can be possible around the world one day, but
Peace can be always in my heart and yours.

Funny Stuff

Funny Stuff

By Kayla, 5th Grade, Overbrook Elementary School

I love making jokes because it makes people laugh and I love making people
laugh. It makes me feel good and it makes them feel good too. The funniest person I
know that is funnier than me is Bill Cosby. He is an artist! Everybody would want to
watch his show and listen to his routines.
Making jokes is like a gift to everybody and it’s just amazing how it cheers
people up. That’s why I do it. What makes me funny are the jokes I tell like ”Why didn’t
the skeleton cross the road… because he didn’t have any guts.” “What did the pig eat for
breakfast… bacon and his friend.” Those are the jokes people laugh at. I just love
making these and other jokes. Being funny is a talent that I share with others.
