Introducing Writecorp a new Blacktop program out of the Kelly Writers House!

What is Writecorp?

Writecorp is a group of UPenn students with a passion for writing, creativity, and kids.  Our members work with local teachers to design and conduct creative writing workshops in classrooms and assist students with writing projects.  We aim to engage Penn students in the local community, assert the importance of creativity in curriculum and classrooms, improve writing skills, and meet the specific requests of teachers.

Writecorp members will conduct in class or after school workshops as requested by a teacher.  We are happy to incorporate specific requests.

Contact allyson@theblacktop.org or submit a request through the Writecorp Workshop Form!

Principles of Writecorp:

  1. Professionalism: Going into schools requires that our program be professional and effective.  We are representing Penn and the Kelly Writers House with our work.  Furthermore, and more importantly, it is crucial that we provide high quality work so as not to waste teachers and students time.  All members are required to attend a four hour training.
  2. Flexibility:  Writecorp is flexible both for Penn students and the schools we work in.  There is no regular time commitment for Writecorp and your participation in workshops depends on your availibility.  Likewise, we are flexible in how we work with teachers.  Different teachers and classrooms need different things and it is important to tailor each workshop to these needs rather than imposing what we may find most interesting on them.  One of the most important parts of Writecorp is our willingness to work with teachers and provide a varied array of workshops and activities in accordance with their requests.
  3. Creativity and Enrichment:  Writecorp seeks to bring enriching and creative activities into the classroom; to assert that creativity and fit in to standard curriculum.  Workshops should balance both a school’s educational needs and enriching students’ interaction with writing.
